Random Football Poll ?s for a "Fog on the Moors" Thursday

1. Which coaches are clearly on the hot seat at this point?
Who is surprisingly not? Uncle Fester over at Da U should be wearing asbestos and lead-shield pants at this point. I think Bunting at UNC might be on a warm seat, but I’m not sure if UNC fans care that their team is losing, what with basketball starting and all (in other words, if they beat hapless Duke, he might somehow return). On the other hand, I’m a little amazed the Ole Miss fans (especially with no real mascot to cheer them up) haven’t noticed how well UT’s offense is looking under Cutcliffe, put that together with how poor they look with The Orgeron, and questioned “wait, why are we paying this lunatic?” Perhaps it has something to do with their coeds…

2. Pick three of the undefeated teams and state your case as to why they won’t run the table. Rutgers—because they’re the State University of New Jersey. All the hotness of Kristen Davis can only go so far. Unless Tony Soprano’s somehow running the Big East now…then all bets are off (well, sort of…and not…you know…literally.) Boise State will lose…I’m not sure to whom…but they will lose, because defense is just not something they’re that familiar with, and Zabransky is due another Sanford Stadium debut-type game. And finally, Ohio State is going to lose. Why? Because I remain maniacally welded to my pre-season shriking of “they can’t lose that many starters on D and go undefeated.” That’s why.

3. Which conference is playing the best football right now?.
The SEC, clearly. The top tier of Auburn, LSU, Florida, UT and Arkansas are playing some great ball, and Florida, LSU and Auburn have seriously sick Defenses. The middle pack teams (SC, Georgia, Bama) aren’t too shaby, and even some bottom-feeders (Vandy and Kentucky) look a lot less suckier than usual. Only Mississippi State looks abjectly horrid (and watch them humilate me now…)

4. Which team is playing above and beyond your expectations this season?
Tennessee sadly. I thought that they might get some improvement on offense with Cutcliffe, but not that Ainge would morph into Peyton Jr. Plus, I didn’t expect them to reload on Defense. While I maintain they’re still suspect against the run (and the fact that the Dawg’s anemic offense was not shut down by them until we started throwing the ball to them) they sadly far better than 5-6. I still hope Bama, LSU and Arkansas whip them though. Oh, and Sub-Carolina too.

5. Which team is crashing and burning in regards to your expectations?
The Dawgs’ performance the past two weekends lands them here in second place. My hope was a rocky season that still finished 9-3 or 8-4 (both are still mathematically possibly). If the defense can’t stop playing “Bend and break” it could be a crash and burn. But FSU’s suckitide is really not what I thought would happen in the preseason. A good defense, decent QB and a renewed commitment to the run game has resulted in: a good defense and a bunch of crap…along with people who forgot what Zombie Paterno did at PennState last year calling for Diddy Bowden’s retirement.

6. Is your pre-season BCS championship game prediction still alive?
Honestly? I don’t remember who I picked to win it all this year…but an SEC team beating a Big 10 (sic) team would be nice.
